Another Retirement
Sadly, another geiko has decided to leave the profession. This time it’s Satoharu (里春) of Kawahisa (川久) in Miyagawa Cho. Her reasons for leaving are unknown, but we wish her the best in whatever she chooses to do going forward ^^

How should a geimaiko handle a situation where a customer gets physically inappropriate and the geimaiko wants to report it to the okaasan of the ochaya? Can the geimaiko refuse to work with the customer afterwards in such a case?
If something were to happen then she’d let the okasan of the establishment know right away. However, such cases are extremely rare, so it’s likely that said geimaiko won’t be called to entertain said guest in the future to avoid any such further encounters ^^

Hello? Could you tell a bit about Danyu??
Danyū (だん祐) of Onaka (大仲) debuted in 1994 as the imōto of Dan-e (だん栄), also of Onaka. She’s been among Gion Kobu’s top earners since she debuted as she’s an incredibly hard worker and attends many ozashiki. So far she’s had one imōto in Danmitsu (だん満) from Hiroshimaya (廣島屋) ^^

Why maiko put their fans at the back side of their obi?
The types of fans that geimaiko own are worn in different spots on their bodies to show their different uses. Sensu, like mai ogi, are worn in the front off to the side as that’s how they’re taken out before a dance is performed in a vert ritualistic manner. Uchiwa are worn tucked into the back of the obi as a way of advertisement and have a more casual feel to them as they’re often paired with yukata ^^

Hi, when do geimaiko usually go on vacation on summer? Do they "take turns" or does the kagai just nearly close so that everyone can rest? Thanks!
Many go on vacation or return to their family homes during Obon in August as the vast majority of Japanese will also do this, leaving the karyukai almost empty ^^

Hi! Wouldn't Asuha be senior by now, she is been around for almost 3 years, do you know why is being so delayed?
Asuha debuted in September of 2021, so she hasn’t even been around for 2 years yet. She’s still a bit away from becoming senior ^^

Is there some kind of complaint department a maiko or geiko can reach out to if an okasan refuses to do something about a customer who repeatedly crosses the lines of appropriate behavior either physically or verbally? What if it's not the customer himself but his relative or frequent guest? Are geiko and maiko supposed to grin and bear it as part of their job?
That kind of stuff doesn’t really happen as customers are generally well behaved since they know how hard it is to get into an establishment and how easily they can be thrown out. If a guest gets too rowdy or out of line it’s the job of the ochaya okasan to intervene, and her first duty is to the business and the geimaiko, not the customers. If, for some reason, an okasan does not act, they could always make a complaint to the kenban who can then take it up to the ochaya union ^^

Has there ever been a geimaiko who quit abruptly due to a financial dispute with an okasan? What happens when a geimaiko doesn't get along with a particular ochaya okasan or a particular customer of that ochaya? Can she refuse to work there or work for that customer?
Of course there have been, but you wouldn’t know since that kind of stuff is kept hush hush. If a geimaiko doesn’t get along with a particular okasan then she won’t be called to that ochaya. A geimaiko would never outwardly show that they dislike a customer. They may make comments to their okasan that they dislike a certain customer, but they would never refuse to work with a customer ^^

Hello! Long time lurker here. Love your blog!
I went to see Kamishichiken's Kitano Odori in March. There was a Geiko (I'm assuming senior geiko) on stage who had long acrylic nails with gold glitter on them. I did not realize Geiko did this and was interested in discovering more. Do you know which geiko that might be? Also, have you ever seen fake nails on anyone else in the karyukai? Her nails looked kind of like this.
I haven’t really seen any pictures from the Kitano Odori, so I can’t help you there. As to why a character would wear fake nails on stage, it’s also done in kabuki and it’s just a way to kind of “jazz up” a character and add a bit of extra something to look at ^^

Would you kindly provide a list (with photos, of course) of your top 10, post-Erikae, iromontsuki?
And am I mistaken, or have I read, that you’re having a book on Kimono, published??
If so I can’t wait to buy that! Will it be a coffee table book, or a book book?
Iromontsuki are incredibly hard to get pictures of as they’re only worn for three days and most people don’t even realize that a special kimono is being worn, so pictures just aren’t taken. So, unfortunately, I just can’t present you with the images that you’re requesting.
As for the book, yes, it’s coming! I was thinking of using my Patreon again to announce news for the book, show previews, etc., so if that’s something that you’d be interested in then please let me know and I can make that happen! I can tell you that it’ll be a bit of a hybrid in that it can function as a coffee table book as it’s full of full color photos (over 100!), but it’s also filled with all of those terms (and kanji!) that you’ve been wondering about when it comes to kimono ^^!
